Introduction to the E-course

It’s not only the taking of photos that is good for us, it’s our photos themselves. Learn the science behind how your photos affect your well-being and how to extend their benefits indefinitely!

Lesson 1: You shoot wall-worthy photos

Most likely you’ve taken many great photos in the last few weeks and months, capturing memorable moments and experiences you don’t want to forget. But having too many photos can also make choosing your best ones difficult.

In Lesson 1, you’ll learn how to quickly identify which of your amazing photos will look great on the wall in your home. Together we’ll go through: 1) how to make a quick first selection; 2) the role of composition, sharpness, and color in wall prints; and 3) the ultimate goal of your photo print.

Step 1: Make a quick first selection

Many of us have hundreds (and sometimes thousands) of digital photos saved on our hard drives. Yet some photos are better than others.

In Lesson 1, Step 1, you’ll learn how to quickly focus on the photos with real wall potential. We’ll go over easy ways to get rid of your “photo fails” and then focus on how to rate your remaining photos to create a first selection of wall-worthy photos.

Step 2:
Composition, sharpness and color count

Identifying which photos would look best on your wall can seem like a daunting task, but it doesn’t need to. After making a quick first selection, it’s time to focus on the elements that can make or break a photo wall print.

In Lesson 1, Step 2, you’ll learn how to use a photo’s composition, sharpness and color to help you decide which of your amazing photos belong on your wall.

Step 3: Photos and feelings

There are many technical aspects of photography, yet how a photo makes you feel can trump nearly everything else.

In Lesson 1, Step 3, we’ll talk about the power of your photos to make you feel happy and how to use that when choosing which photos to hang in your home.

Lesson 2: Size does matter

You’re a great photographer, but are you a great interior decorator, too? Chances are that you can easily identify your best photos, but deciding how big they should be for a particular spot in your home is tricky.

In Lesson 2, you’ll learn everything you need to know to decide how big you should print your great photos no matter where you want to hang them at home.

Step 1: Understanding standard photo sizes

The range of photo print sizes available is immense, but not all sizes are created equal when it comes to hanging photos on your wall at home.

In Lesson 2, Step 1, you’ll learn about standard photo sizes from small to huge and how these sizes affect what your photos look like on the wall.

Step 2: What effect do you want create?

Photos hung in your home have an outsized impact on you and the space where they hang. If you know how, you can use them to help you create a specific vibe or effect in your home.

In Lesson 2, Step 2, we’ll discuss the different effects you can create with the color and style of your photos.

Step 3: A print size for every space

Your home is full of perfect spots to show of your stunning photos, from your living room to the bedroom. But which size photo print will look best in each location?

In Lesson 2, Step 3, we’ll go through all of the different spots in your home that would look great with photo prints and talk about how to determine the best photo print size for each space.

Lesson 3: All about resolution

For photographers, resolution is a familiar term. Yet, the resolution needed for photo wall prints is very different from that needed for photos of other sizes or photos viewed only digitally.

In Lesson 3, we’ll get into the details of why viewing distance matters for photo wall prints, how to check your photo’s resolution and how to figure out just how big you can print with the resolution you have.

Step 1: Why viewing distance matters

Different sized photos are typically viewed from different distances, but why is this and how does it effect your photo prints?

In Lesson 3, Step 1, you’ll learn what viewing distance is and why it matters for your photos.

Step 2: Check your photo’s resolution

Photo resolution especially important when printing photos. But understanding what exactly a photo’s resolution measures, or how to figure out the resolution of a particular photo, is not always self-evident.

In Lesson 3, Step 2, you’ll learn exactly how photo resolution is determined and where you can find this information for your own photos.

Step 3: How big can I print?

Your photo’s resolution determines its maximum print size, but how exactly does that work?

In Lesson 3, Step 3, we’ll go over the differences between PPI and DPI, and how to calculate your maximum print size using your photo’s resolution.

Lesson 4: The right ratio for your photo

Aspect ratios can have an enormous impact on a photo’s composition and how it looks on the wall, yet they don’t always get the attention they deserve.

In Lesson 4, we’ll look at several different aspect ratios and explore how they can affect the quality of your composition, where they look best on the wall, and how to check and change a photo’s ratio.

Step 1: Ratio affects your composition

A photo’s aspect ratio is very important because it can directly affect a photo’s composition and thus its quality.

In Lesson 4, Step 1, you’ll learn what an aspect ratio is and explore how a photo’s composition changes when goes from one aspect ratio to another.

Step 2:
Different ratios look different on the wall

Photos on the wall can have very different sizes and very different aspect ratios. Why do some aspect ratios look better in one location than another?

In Lesson 4, Step 2, we’ll discuss aspect ratios and your home. Together, we’ll explore where different aspect ratios (3:2, 2:1, 3:1 and 1:1) look best by looking at examples hung in different spots around the home, including above the couch and in the bedroom.

Step 3: Check your photo’s ratio and change it to suit you

Once you understand the importance of a photo’s aspect ratio and how different ratios look in different locations, you’re ready to make some changes.

In Lesson 4, Step 3, you’ll learn exactly how to check your photo’s ratio and how to change it to best fit your photo and where you’d like to hang it.

Lesson 5:
From digital photo to real photo print

Once you know which photo you want to print, are sure its resolution is high enough and like its aspect ratio, there are just a few final considerations before your digital photo can be transformed into a real photo print.

In Lesson 5, we’ll go over the final steps of this transformation by talking about which photo file format, color space you and workflow you should use when saving your photos for printing.

Step 1: Best file format for printing

There are many different file formats (RAW, JPG, TIFF, PNG) but which one is best when converting a digital photo into a printed photo?

In Lesson 5, Step 1, you’ll learn about different photo file types, why some are better than others for printed photos, and exactly which one you should use when creating a beautiful wall print for your home.

Step 2: Setting your color space

A photo’s color space can have a large impact on the quality of the photo print. Once you understand the differences between color spaces, it’s easy to understand why one is better than the other when printing photos.

In Lesson 5, Step 2, we’ll go through the differences between the CMYK, sRGB and AdobeRGB color spaces and discuss why they’re not all equal when it comes to printing photos.

Step 3: Saving workflow

Saving your photo for printing is the last step in transforming a digital photo into a beloved wall print. With the right workflow, this saving will be fast and easy.

In Lesson 5, Step 3, we’ll walk step-by-step through how to save your photos for printing, including the workflow of setting the photo’s aspect ratio, checking its resolution, and selecting the best saving settings.
