In December, we asked you to freeze the season—and submit your best cold winter photos, from frosty mornings and snowy landscapes to festive celebrations! Our photo contest has now come to an end. From the 25 top-voted submissions, our expert photo jury has chosen the three final winners. Below, you can find the jury’s feedback. The winner of the photo contest Say Freeze… is.. Erik Verbeeck
Erik Verbeeck convinced the jury with the stunning photography of a scene that could come straight out of a fairytale. It is not only the marvelous motif of a group of graceful swans surrounded by a winter wonderland that makes this photo so enchanting but especially the dramatic lighting: a beam of light enters the photo from the upper left corner and crosses it diagonally, bringing a warm color into the otherwise cold-white landscape. The mist, illuminated by the sunray, adds to the feeling of mystery in the scene. The photo was taken at sunrise in the early morning on Lake Kussharo in Hokkaido, Japan. 2nd place goes to … Anouk de Vries
Anouk convinced the jury with a wildlife shot of a burrowing owl in the snow. The photo is of high technical quality: the animal is captured in motion, which gives the photo a vivid energy, yet the subject is razor-sharp, with the eyes—the center of attention—in perfect focus. The positioning follows the golden ratio, creating a harmonious yet dynamic composition. The background is blurred, drawing all attention to the main subject. 3rd place goes to …Willem Klopper
Willem impressed the jury with an Ice-landscape shot taken at the Afsluitdijk (closure dike) in the Netherlands. The intricate ice formations are captured in detail in the foreground. The photo draws the eye toward the center of the frame, positioning the ice-like sculptures in a vast, open landscape. A clear blue sky with the dazzling sun gives the scenery a cheerful clarity.
